Led Zeppelin
In Through the Out Door(1979)
Significant due to unusual album design as well as the hidden gimmick which causes the inner sleeve to turn from black and white to color when contacting water. The album was the last Led Zeppelin album to top the charts in America and the last album recorded before the death of Drummer John Bonham in 1980. The album was designed by Hipgnosis, who designed covers for Led Zeppelin, Nazareth, and Pink Floyd as well. Compared to other Led Zeppelin Albums, Robert Plant referred to the album as reserved and sanitized.

David Bowie
Stage (1978)
David Bowie is one of the most acclaimed arena rock stars of the 70s, releasing multiple rock operas and albums and Stage is an embodiment of his work during the time period. The work is a compilation of key songs from various albums released over the 70s by Bowie, including The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and Spiders from Mars, Low, Heroes, and Station to Station. The album was recorded live, using recording of performances from Bowie’s Isolar II World Tour. The album was re-released three times after, the last time being in 2005.

Blondie
Parallel Lines (1979)
One of the most notable albums released by New Wave/Disco group Blondie, containing many of their hits such as “Heart of Glass” and “One Way or Another.” The album is is on The Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and reached Number 1 on UK’s charts and Number 6 on US charts. The album was re-released in 2001 with 4 bonus tracks and again reissued in 2008 as a Special 30th Anniversary Collectors Edition.

Lynyrd Skynyrd
Freebird (1974)
The song “Freebird” is considered by many the epitome of Southern Rock, along with “Sweet Home Alabama,” also by Skynyrd, and the concert version is considered the 2nd most influential guitar solo of all time as well as the longest (the song lasting 14 minutes). The song was used as a finale for their performances and is a combination of both a ballad and a hard rock song. In 2009, VH1 rated the song as the 26th Best Hard Rock Song of All Time. Following a plane crash in 1977, which killed several band members, the song was played as an instrumental.

Pink Floyd
The Wall (1978)
The Wall, and the concert The Wall Live, are some of the most notable rock operas in history and tell the story of Pink, an individual afflicted by abandonment and isolation, represented by a wall between him and society. Later made into a feature film. The Wall was placed at number 87 on The Rolling Stone’s Greatest 500 Albums of All Time. The cover design is minimal, with the original containing no text and a white brick wall. Sleeve Art and Picture Labels by cartoonist Gerald Scarfe show partially completed versions of the wall with characters implemented into the pictures.

Rolling Stone Issue 156
March 1974
Rolling Stone Covers featured stunning iconography representative of their era. In this issue, they focus on the rock/folk artist Bob Dylan, who was one of the influences of the anti-society movements of the 70s. Reminiscent of the early 70s, the Rolling Stone logo on the top changed over the years, which is noticed once compared to both early and later copies of the publication. Also notable is during this era, many of the covers were paintings of the artists, whereas later, with the rise of the digital camera, the covers became photographs.

Rolling Stone Issue 274
September 1978
The Rolling Stone not only reported on music, but also current events and film. On this cover, Gary Busey is depicted as Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash years earlier, in a feature film about the rock icon. Reporting on topics like the relationship between Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, the publication gained a reputation of having iconic magazine covers, along with TIME and LIFE.
